The project objectives are to
optimize the processing conditions of different waste papers available
indigenously and of foreign origin and to study the present practices of
waste paper processing in Indian mills and problem being faced by them and
their possible solutions.
Study of practices of waste
paper processing in Indian mills and problems faced :
Recycling
of waste paper in India is rather complex due to inadequate machinery, a
nomenclature for Indian standard qualities of waste paper has been defined.
The present practices of waste paper processing in Indian mills, problems
being faced by them and optimum process parameters for recycling different
types of waste paper were studied. The work conducted focused on :
Study of paper samples from different Paper
mills using waste paper, laboratory evaluation of waste paper
processing techniques with particular emphasis on indigenous
varieties and suggesting steps to produce better paper from waste
papers.

Due to lack of appropriate technology and
inferior waste paper quality received in Indian mills as compared to world
standards, mills are facing difficulty in producing better quality pulp from
waste paper. Therefore for processing different waste papers following
problems faced by Indian mills were studied for taking up the optimization
studies :
- Slushability of adhesive tapes.
- Processing of wet strength papers.
- Processing of laminated coated waste papers.
- Deinking of old newspapers.
- Blending trials using mixed office waste paper & softwood
pulp.
- Hygro-expansitivity of papers containing waste paper as major
furnish component
