Objectives

¤ To conduct pilot plant studies on the pulping and bleaching process optimized in laboratory.

¤ To conduct the pilot plant studies on the up gradation of raw materials like straw, grasses, etc. as per the specific requirement of the mills.

¤ To help industry in alternate recovery system using fluidized bed reactor like 'DARS'.

¤ To assist industry in improving brown stock washing of pulps produced from agro-waste by conducting studies on double wire belt washer.

¤ To conduct studies on falling film evaporator with a view to increase steam economy and overcome scaling problems.

¤ To conduct the studies on Thermal treatment of black liquor from agro residues to find its effect on viscosity.

¤ Ultrafiltration of black liquor.

Significant Achievements

¤ The training was given to engineering students from IPT, in mill operation & process involved in Pulping, brown stock washing & bleaching.

¤ The successful pilot plant studies were made for production of International quality specialty pulp from Jute based fiber under UNIDO project. Which confirmed the findings of bench scale unit.

¤ Successful urea pulping was undertake on pilot plant scale.

¤ Successful batch scale studies were undertaken for recovery of chemicals from black liquor of agro residues mills using DARS process.

¤ Pilot plant studies proved that viscosity of black liquor provided from agro-residues can be significantly reduced by thermal treatment.

¤ Successful semi pilot plant scale demonstration was given on desilication of black liquor & membrane filtration.

¤ Training was given to lab persons from North Korea on pulping & evaporation.

¤ Successful trails were conducted & demonstrated on binderless briquetting of organic wastes from paper industry for use as fuel.

¤ The pilot plant studies under UNDP sponsored projects "Chemical recovery for small pulp mills using non-woody raw materials" and "Assistance to non-wood based pulp & paper industry" were conducted for successful completion of the projects.

¤ Successful pilot plant scale trials were conducted in making compost from ETP sludge comparable to cow dung manure with added advantage of increasing water retention value of soil.

¤ Pioneering work was carried out in the field of upgradation of raw materials like straw and grasses using disc mill with the advantages of increase in pulp yield, strength properties, decrease in chemical consumption and silica content.

¤ Double Wire Belt Washer : The major advantages being one-third consumption of energy, water, civil structure and man power requirement with better washing efficiency, higher liquor concentration and consistency of discharge. Its demonstration was given to representatives from Industry sharing its advantages over rotary drum washer.

¤ Successful pilot plant trials under various sponsored projects were carried out.

¤ A mill size desilication pilot plant based on CPPRI technology is in operation at HNL, Kerala, capable of processing 40 m3 of black liquor per hour. It is an excellent example of successful desilication technology developed by CPPRI.

¤ A commercial scale high rate biomethanation plant successfully commissioned at Satia Paper mill is in operation at more than the target value of biogas generation and is being used for steam generation.
1. Briquetting Plant
Using this plant, briquettes can be made from organic solid waste like pith, straw, wood and bamboo dust, coal dust and ETP sludge of paper mill and can be used as fuel in place of coal in boilers, brick kiln and also for domestic use.

2. Thermal Treatment Plant
Institute has developed a process for thermal treatment of black liquor to reduce viscosity and improve combustion properties enabling to fire the black liquor at high dry solids. This utility improves the energy efficiency of the chemical recovery system. Based on this process, a pilot plant has been set up at CPPRI to test mills black liquor and to crystallise data for commercial scale application. The process can be retrofitted in the existing chemical recovery system and could be an integral part of new chemical recovery installation.

3. "DARS " Pilot Plant
A "DARS " Pilot Plant is available for batch scale trials and complete facilities for Black Liquor evaporation are available. The Institute can take up complete laboratory evaluation of spent liquors for suitability for DARS chemical recovery system including process optimization, and operating conditions. Material Balance and physico-chemical analysis of the products.
