Pulp and Paper Industry is amongst the top 20 highly polluting industries in India. The paper industry is confronted with environmental issues which differ from one segment to another. The problems of AOX and colour in discharge effluents, mercaptans emissions and disposal of lime sludge are some of the key problems the large mills are confronting with. The mills based on agro-residues, in absence of an economically viable chemical recovery system are discharging liquid effluents to the receiving streams causing pollution. Introduction of effective pollution control measures has become essential in view of public awareness. There is a need that industry should adopt cleaner production technologies to minimize the waste at source.

The recent issues before the paper industry are to study the life cycle assessment of the products emerging from the paper industry to evaluate its impact on global warming. The various projects undertaken by the institute to address the environmental issues are as follows :

  1. Desilication of Black Liquor - Transfer of Technology

  2. Development and Utilization of Lignin By-Products

  3. Anaerobic / Aerobic Treatment of Pulp & Paper Mill Effluents

  4. Elimination / Reduction of Phenolic & Chlorophenolic Toxic Materials

  5. Modification of Bleaching Technology
