Pulp & Paper Industry is considered to be the 5th largest consumer of the energy after aluminium, fertilizer, iron, steel and cement industry. The energy consumption in Indian Pulp & Paper industry varies from 23-37 GJ per tonne of paper in comparison to the mills in developed countries, where the specific energy consumption is 18-22 GJ/T.

Reviewing the scope of energy consumption, Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs, Govt. of India, has come out with the Energy Conservation Act dated 29th Sept. 2001 to provide for efficient use of energy & its conservation. The energy bill highlights the importance of energy audit and process optimization to reduce the energy cost component, which amounts upto 30% in Indian Pulp & Paper Industry. CPPRI has been actively engaged since 1989 to promote energy conservation and management practices in pulp and paper industry and has trained manpower & state-of-art facilities to conduct energy and process audits. The following projects are aimed at energy conservation & management:-

  1. Energy Conservation in Pulp & Paper Industry

  2. Modern Pulping Technology

  3. Modification of Black Liquor Properties for Improved Chemical Recovery Efficiency
