Energy Consumption
Profile
Pulp & Paper Industry is highly energy intensive and
India ranks among the 6 energy intensive industries. The other energy
intensive industries being, Aluminum, Cement, Fertilizer, Iron & Steel &
Glass.
Indian Paper Industry consumes 4 million tonnes of coal &
2 million MWh of purchased electricity. Out of the total energy requirement
of the pulp and paper production, 75-78% energy is used as process heat and
15-25% as electrical power. The energy requirement of the Indian paper
industry is estimated to increase further in the years to come.
There is large variation in energy
consumption in Indian mills and mills in developed countries. Steam
consumption in Indian mills varies from 6-16 t/t paper. Electricity
consumption variation is from 1200-2200 kWh/t. Mills in developed countries
use steam from 6-9 t/t and power 1550-1250 kWh/t.
Energy Management Cell
In
view of energy scenario the need for energy management & conservation
was strongly felt. CPPRI started its activities in the field of Energy
Management in 1989 and since then has been actively engaged in various
projects for energy conservation in this sector.
Energy
conservation is one of the major activities of the Institute and in recent
times the full fledged energy management cell have been set up to help
various agencies/Industries in the area of energy conservation. Institute
has identified and developed some of the energy efficient process
technologies which are being demonstrated on pilot & commercial scale.
Institute is also engaged actively in energy audits, development of computer
simulation programmes and training programmes in the area of energy
conservation.
