» Detoxification of Bleach Plant Effluent
for Recycling & Reuse
 Gas

Objectives
In
order to make bleach plant effluent compatible for recycling & reuse and
also to reduce the level of toxicity, the techno-economic feasibility of
physico-chemical methods for treatment of bleach effluent is to be
evaluated.
Activities
Chemical treatment
studies of bleach plant effluents from wood and agro based mills for removal
of toxic AOX were undertaken, which included optimisation of chemical
dosages both individual as well as in combination for coagulation and
flocculation, impact of various variables like pH, temperature and time on
reduction in AOX, COD and colour & settling characteristics of
precipitated sludge. It was observed that treatment with alum and lime
individually was not much effective in AOX reduction from bleach plant
effluent while the combination of alum and lime was found comparatively more
effective.
Improvement in settling of precipitated sludge was also
observed with addition of polymer. The preliminary results achieved indicate
that chemical treatment are quite effective for treatment of bleach plant
effluent to reduce COD, colour & AOX and make them compatible for
further recycle and reuse
