» CSIR Project on New Millennium Indian
Technology Leaderships Initiative (NMITLI), A Biodegradable Plastics from
Agricultural Wastes - Cellulose based Bagasse derived cellulose.
Objective
Production
of eco-friendly biodegradable plastics from bagasse.
Activities
A
multi Institutional project on biodegradable polymer from bagasse has been
initiated with participation of NCL CPPRI TCRDC and some of
the leading sugar industries, for manufacturing of biodegradable polymer
from bagasse cellulose. The project is initially for a period of two years
wherein CPPRI will provide technical support for manufacturing of cellulose
using conventional pulping technologies. The conversion of this cellulose
for a high value added products from low cost agricultural waste could give
India a leadership position for both this technology as well as the
material. Besides recovery of cellulose, the other major constituents like
hemicelluloses and lignin would provide further value addition to make
process techno economically viable.
After various meetings with
CSIR scientists and project authorities, a MoU has been signed between
CPPRI, NCL Pune and TCRDC, Patiala. Activities of the same are being
initiated by preparation of status report.
